CBD and vegetal oils against eczema

Eczema and CBD

What is eczema?

Eczema is a common inflammatory skin disease that causes itchy, dry skin, rashes, scaly patches, and skin infections

This skin condition affects people of all ages but mainly affects infants and children. It can be triggered by exposure to extreme weather conditions, stress, an allergy or by genetic transmission.

Different types of eczema

Atopic eczema

Atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis is the most popular and widespread eczema that appears due to excessive dryness and dysfunction of the skin barrier. Favored by a genetic predisposition, this disease can be triggered and aggravated by allergens, irritation caused by certain clothing or products, stress and climate changes. It is characterized by the appearance of red blotches with vesicles and crusts generating lesions. Its evolution occurs through periods of flare-ups interspersed with periods of remission.

Contact eczema

Contact eczema or contact dermatitis is triggered by inflammation of the skin caused by sensitization to an allergen in contact with the skin or contact with chemicals, detergents, or even cosmetic products containing alcohol. It appears between 24 and 48 hours after the contact in the form of redness, red blotches or swelling of the skin in a specific area. This allergic reaction can occur even in the absence of a genetic background favoring the allergy.

Vascular stasis eczema

Vascular stasis eczema is an inflammation of the skin on the lower legs caused by the appearance of chronic edema due to chronic venous insufficiency. This skin condition also causes swelling and flaking.

Dyshidrotic eczema

Dyshidrotic eczema , also called dyshidrosis, is caused by heat. This form of eczema is characterized by the presence of small blisters and red, thick skin on the hands and feet. Its origins are not clearly defined; it may be atopic or contact dermatitis which has deteriorated or may be triggered by other factors such as tobacco and humidity.

CBD and eczema

In case you are prone to this disease, the most important thing to do on a daily basis is to keep your skin well hydrated. This will help soothe the itching.

A study published in 2019 by Italian scientists demonstrated that CBD can significantly improve skin elasticity and hydration. During the same year, Hungarian researchers proved that CBD significantly impacts the formation and regeneration of the skin barrier .

If CBD proves to be an ideal complement to your treatment to relieve eczema thanks to its moisturizing and soothing properties, its main benefit lies elsewhere.

The role of CBD on inflammation and eczema

CBD and many other cannabinoids are known to act on the processes that trigger inflammatory reactions in our body. Studies have proven that CBD has a positive impact on many dermatoses and eczema.

How does CBD act on our body?

Phyto-cannabinoids, including CBD, which we find in hemp, have the remarkable ability to replace endocannabinoids when our body does not produce enough of them and thus play a key role in inflammatory reactions.

The anti-inflammatory phenomenon and CBD

Numerous studies attribute undeniable effectiveness to CBD as an anti-inflammatory on several levels:

  • By blocking macrophage migration (digestion of foreign particles and pathogens)/li>
  • By regulating the activation of lymphocytes (recognition and destruction of foreign cells)
  • By inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory substances
  • By promoting the release of other anti-inflammatory substances called “Cytokines”.

Furthermore, cannabidiol can inhibit the activity of an enzyme (FAAH) involved in the degradation of anandamide, one of the endocannabinoids synthesized by the human body. This substance is also an agonist (activator) of the ion channel receptor. TRPV1, and an antagonist (block) of the TRPM8 ion channel receptor, involved in thermal sensitivity and certain pains. According to a 2018 study, CBD activates these receptors to desensitize them to any new stimulation, thus reducing chronic inflammatory pain.
It is because of its anti-inflammatory, analgesic and neuroprotective properties that the use of CBD in the formulation of cosmetic products for eczema is becoming more and more common.
